Inside The Alpenglow Effect: SODO’s Most Unexpected Mountain Culture Hub
This new SODO business brings a distinctly different kind of energy. The Alpenglow Effect is reimagining what a ski and snowboard shop can be—blending technical expertise with immersive design, creative programming, and a strong sense of community.
Part retail, part cultural venue, and part experiential hub, The Alpenglow Effect invites both seasoned outdoor enthusiasts and newcomers into an environment that feels approachable, expressive, and intentionally different from traditional outdoor spaces. With its neon aesthetic, rotating art, and interactive elements, they’re building a following not just around gear, but around shared experience.
We caught up with Rylie Stovall, Owner of The Alpenglow Effect, to learn more about their vision, how they got started, and what’s ahead.

You describe The Alpenglow Effect as “Not your average ski/board shop.” Tell us more about what this means to you.
To me, that means we were never trying to be just another gear shop. Yes, we deliver the best technical work and services people need, but the bigger vision has always been about building something with more creativity, atmosphere, and a real community around it.
We lean into an 80s neon vibe (including a snowboard museum, rotating art gallery, and an x-files type interactive missing girl case to follow if one chooses), immersive experiences, and a space that feels memorable instead of purely transactional.
I wanted it to feel welcoming to people who already live this lifestyle and to people who might feel intimidated by traditional outdoor spaces. It is a ski and snowboard shop, but it is also very intentionally its own world.

How did you start The Alpenglow Effect? What’s your story?
Haha, actually, it started over a beer with two very passionate people asking, “Why don’t we just do our own thing?” And that was all it took.
From there, The Alpenglow Effect grew out of the love of the mountains, creative culture, and the feeling that outdoor spaces should be more welcoming and inspiring than they often are. I saw room for something that could combine real technical skill (Chia is the master in his craft with decades of technical experience) with stronger identity, better energy, and a deeper sense of belonging.
I did not want to build something generic, exclusive, or forgettable. I wanted to create a business that felt alive, immersive, and genuinely connected to the people around it.

You moved into the Old Rainier Brewery late last year. How’s it going so far? And what made you choose SODO?
It has been a great fit so far, and moving into the Old Rainier Brewery felt right for us from the beginning. We chose the area because it aligns with our goals of being close to local artists, musicians, and creative culture while also being incredibly accessible at the intersection of I-90 and I-5, with the mountains calling in every direction. That accessibility matters because we want people to actually be able to use the space, not just admire the idea of it.
SODO has the kind of gritty, creative, hardworking energy that fits what we are building. We wanted to be somewhere that feels connected to the city’s makers and culture, not tucked away from it.

As we quickly head into nicer weather, what can we look forward to at The Alpenglow Effect? Tell us about your plans for the coming months.
This summer, we are really leaning into our identity as Seattle’s most Flexible, Weatherproof Creative Event Space (rooftop/indoor) at highly accessible price points so more of the community can actually take part.
We are building around an 80s neon synthwave vibe, with immersive event rentals, vintage windbreaker rentals or purchases for themed parties, immersive art pop-ups, vintage clothing exchanges, outdoor educational classes and more creative nightlife energy.
We are inviting outdoor enthusiasts, artists, DJs, promoters, teachers, and organizers to book classes, pop-ups, craft nights, movies, community care gatherings, corporate functions, neurodivergent meetups, poetry open mics, yoga, clothing swaps, trivia nights, and stand-up comedy.
This event space is about YOU so chat with us about your goals and we can help you build the perfect package. With a state-of-the-art sound system an multiple projectors screens, indoor and rooftop options, and no minimum alcohol or catering orders, we offer hard-to-find flexibility. We are also launching a subscription plan soon to make access even easier.
